Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant

Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant

A few little lies never hurt anyone. Right?

Wrong. Paul has a plan. He has a vision of a better future, and he’s going to make it happen. If it means hiding or exaggerating a few things here and there, no harm done.

But when he charms his way on to a family holiday…
And finds himself trapped among tensions and emotions he doesn’t understand…
By the time he starts to realise that however painful the truth is, it’s the lies that cause the real damage…

Well, by then, it might just be too late.

This pyschological thriller from Sabine Durrant is a real page turner and definitely one of those novels you can read in one sitting. Lie With Me focuses on the protagonist, Paul, who, at the age of 42, is hanging on to a small literary success in his early twenties with no new job offers and no real prospects. He has no wife, no money and no home.  So when a chance meeting with an old friend from university leads to an invite  to Greece, with a group of family and friends, Paul jumps at the chance. It is on this holiday that things take a drastic turn for the worse.

As the title indicates, this story is all about lies and explores how even the smallest fabrications of truth can unravel into a tangled mess of deception with dire consequences. Paul’s character throughout is subtly creepy; he is just one of those guys who makes women feel uncomfortable (we all know one). Towards the middle of the book, the reader becomes aware of the huge hole Paul is digging for himself through his constant lies. There is a sense that something dark is going to happen but Sabine Durrant successfully conceals the plot twist until the very end. Unfortunately, for me, the ending was a little bit rushed, leaving me with one of those cinematic ‘is that it?’ feelings. However, for all the fans of page-turning suspsense thrillers, Lie With Me is definitely worth a read!
